Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic treatment that consist of pouring a thin and steady stream of warm oil continuously on the forehead for 20 to 40 minutes out of a cooper vessel. It’s usually preceded by Abhyanga, Ayurvedic massage.
Benefits of Shirodhara
The main and most obvious benefit of Shirodhara is that it calms the nervous system. In our society today, we all have imbalance in our sympathetic nervous system. Its main function is to activate the physiological changes that occur during our fight-or-flight response. It stimulates the adrenal glands triggering the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline. This causes stress in the body and mind. Shirodhara calms this system and brings our bodies back to equilibrium.
Rejuvenates the Third Eye Chakra
Heightens the awareness of one’s body and mind. By tapping into one’s third eye chakra, one is able to cultivate more mental focus. It improves clarity of the mind. People have reported increased decisiveness and perception. People have reported increased spiritual awareness and higher consciousness.
Balances Vata Dosha Imbalance
Vata Dosha is the dosha of Space and Air. When in balance, it’s visionary, creative and social. When out of balance, it’s scattered and anxious. Having a space being held for us where we feel safe and supported is important for our mental health. People often forget that it’s not just enough to be social, but it’s also important to be touched. I’m not talking about in a sexual way, though we all need that too, but in a nurturing way.

Tips for those contemplating receiving Shirodhara:
Give yourself a lot of time before and after to reflect. Set an intention.
Wear clothing you don’t care about. There’s a lot of oil going on.
Bring a shirt or plastic bag to cover the top of the seat in your car.
Find out which oil it used before the treatment and test yourself for allergic reactions.
Get up Slowly after the treatment.
Allow the oil to sit in your hair overnight and wash it in the morning.
Place a towel over your pillow to prevent the oil from damaging your pillow.
Apply shampoo into the hair before adding water so it can adhere to the oils.
